El que conta:
Conta la vida de dos personatges reals, músics francesos del segle XVII, que representen dues maneres de transitar l'espinós camí de l’art. Un és el mestre de viola da gamba Sainte Colombe, un vertader geni del seu instrument i de la composició, que des de la mort de la seva esposa viu allunyat del món i es tanca per a tocar i composar en una cabana de troncs, negant-se a anar a la Cort, on el demanen per a ser músic estable. L’altre és un jove de grans condicions per la música, que persistentment intenta aconseguir ser acceptat com a alumne de Sainte Colombe, tot i que les seves idees estan molt lluny de la filosofa del seu mestre, Marin Marais conceb la música com un vehicle per a triomfar i no dubta en cercar un ingrés a la cort, com a forma d’aconseguir un ascens social .
